Henry G. Sanchez
As an artist, Sanchez makes long-term, interdisciplinary and social practice projects based on the intersection of visual art with socio-political issues, natural sciences, the environment and political philosophy.
Sanchez founded the Bio-Art Bayou-torium in 2019, a bilingual, socially engaged bio-art project. The Bayou-torium is an art studio-science laboratory housed in a shipment container along Houston’s Buffalo Bayou. Its mission is to foster stewardship of Houston's Bayous from residents of Houston’s Hispanic East End neighborhoods.
Sanchez is a frequent contributor to the online art magazine, GLASSTIRE. He has lectured and participated in panels at universities, symposiums, and conferences across the United States. Sanchez is a founder member and Steering Committee member for the Houston Alliance for Latinx Arts.
Born and raised in Houston, Sanchez received his BFA in Painting at the University of Houston in 1990. He is a 2000 Masters of International Relations at Rutgers University, and a 2014 M.F.A. graduate of Art Practice in Interdisciplinary Arts, at the School of Visual Arts. In 2022 Sanchez was named the inaugural Artist-in-Residence for the Buffalo Bayou Partnership in Houston, TX.
He returned to in Houston in 2016 after residing in New York City for many years. Now living and working from his family home in the East End, Sanchez makes artwork based in the Second Ward as a committed stakeholder who connects with his Mexican-American roots, community by taking inspiration from his latino/a/x/e neighbors and culture.
He has served on the HALA steering committee since 2018.
