Our Mission
To engage with and foster leadership within Houston's Latinx arts communities; actively share their talents and connect via professional development; promote artistic collaboration; and advocate for policy changes in our City’s and County’s fiscal structure for equitable funding for Hispanic/Latino/a/x/Mexican-American artists and arts organizations; To present breaking news and important developments relevant to our field and cater to the Latinx experience as first-hand responders; Translation/ interpretation (Spanish), answering questions about opportunities and presenting the latest news pertinent to the Latinx arts community; Acting as a network hub for information, in order to build a brain trust and disseminate knowledge and present solutions where needed.
HALA initially took shape in late 2018 through informal community gatherings in response to the publication of a Houston arts equity report conducted by National Association of Latino Arts and Cultures (NALAC). NALAC illuminated the historic inequities and deficits faced by Latinx artists and arts organization when compared to other groups in Houston. Evolving over time, HALA transitioned into an artist-led advocacy group committed to cultivating leadership within Houston's Latinx arts community.
Houston Alliance of Latinx Arts
Themes we use to foster strong connections and promote activism within the Houston Art communities:
Networking and professional development
Artistic collaboration
Arts Policy Strategy
HALA is interested in creating a strong and healthy coalition of Latinx artists and arts administrators in Houston to work toward changing the status quo.
The group meets quarterly and creates a safe space to cultivate relationships within their professional and personal spheres. The meetings are held at different arts venues throughout Houston.
